Six suspected pirates detained, arraigned: facing 30 years' in jail | Coastweek

Container vessel MV 'Ever Dynamic', [left] was attacked in the Western Indian Ocean in November 2017. Large oil tanker 'Abqaiq' [right] was attacked in April 2018. Recent attacks by a suspected Pirate Action Group against the 55,000t Container Ship MV 'Ever Dynamic' and on the Fishing Vessel 'Gallerna III' in the same vicinity 300 miles east of Mogadishu demonstrated the existing capabilities for long range pirate activity. Six suspected Somalia pirates were subsequently detained and the skiff/ whalers and equipment seized. The six suspects have been transferred to the Seychelles to be investigated by the Seychellois authorities, where if convicted, face up to 30 years in jail. Most recent targeted approach by suspect Somali pirates to shipping provides evidence of the continued need for Naval Force presence across the both the Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin. Importantly, as well as the continuing application of BMP by ships in the 'High Risk Area' and time critical co-ordination between Naval Assets, MSCHOA and UKMTO. EU NAVFOR remains a catalyst for closer co-operation, co-ordination and partnership. PHOTOS - EU NAVFOR

Never Ending Story: CTF ships seize another huge Heroin haul

Never Ending Story: CTF ships seize another huge Heroin haul | coastweek

French Marine Nationale destroyer Jean de Vienne have secured their second drug seizure this year in support of Combined Task Force (CTF) 150. A total of 530 kilograms (kgs) of heroin was seized during an operation in the international waters of the Arabian Sea. Jean de Vienne’s seizure is the tenth for CTF150 since January this year; which together with Her Majesty’s Australian Ship Warramunga and Pakistani Naval Ship Aslat totals in excess of 22 tonnes of narcotics seized. Asian-refined heroin derived from Afghan or Burmese poppy seeds flows by dhow sailing vessel and by air into Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania. There it is redirected to Europe, and sometimes, via Nigeria, to Mexico and North America. Al-Shabaab, the Islamist, Al-Qaeda-affiliated terror movement of Somalia, derives much of its predatory income from the movement of Asian heroin, charcoal and locally produced qat [miraa].
