OFF SOMALIA -- During their joint counter-piracy patrols off the coast of Somalia, the commanding officer of Republic of Korea warship, Choi Young, Kim Kyung Ryul, took the opportunity to invite Operation Atalanta’s Force Commander, Rear Admiral Rafael Fernández-Pintado Muñoz-Rojas and his Force HQ staff on board. After being warmly welcomed on the flight deck, Rear Admiral Fernández-Pintado was given an operational briefing about the Republic of Korea Navy and its commitment to strengthening maritime security in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. During their meeting ESPS Galicia and ROKS Choi Young’s navigators carried out ship manoeuvres as a sign of the close partnership between Operation Atalanta and the Republic of Korea Navy. Spain command EU NAVFOR Somalia counter-piracy operation | Coastweek

DJIBOUTI -- Rear Admiral Rafael Fernández-Pintado Muñoz-Rojas has assumed the role of Force Commander of the European Union’s counter-piracy Operation Atalanta on board his flagship, ESPS Galicia, during a ceremony held in Djibouti port. The ceremony was attended by the Spanish Minister of Defence, EXCMA María Dolores de Cospedal García; the head of the EU Delegation in Djibouti, Ambassador Adam Kulach and Operation Atalanta’s Deputy Operation Commander (DCOM), Rear Admiral Giovanbattista Raimondi. Djibouti is a key partner to the EU, with the busy port providing valuable logistical support to Operation Atalanta maritime patrol aircraft and warships. Translators from the Djiboutian Navy also regularly embark Operation Atalanta warships during their counter-piracy patrols to assist the sailors during their meetings with Somali and other regional forces.
