Helicopters mark decade of Somalia Counter-Piracy operations

Helicopters mark decade of Somalia Counter-Piracy operations | Coastweek

EU NAVFOR warships have patrolled the waters off the coast of Somalia for over ten years now. The worst of the Somali piracy crisis in 2011 has been successfully repressed, but the need for ongoing patrols in the western Indian Ocean remains. EU NAVFOR relies on warships and helicopters provided by EU States in order to combat that piracy threat. Fourteen EU Member States have provided warships to EU NAVFOR for its 'Operation Atalanta' since 2008, as have partner nations like Norway, Ukraine and Korea and Colombia, so a variety of helicopters have been embarked. They have different characteristics but many similarities. Featured here is the SH-60 helicopter operated by EU NAVFOR ship ESPS Relampago.

Beautiful scenery painted by talented Coast artist Zuber Bakhrani reflecting life in the historic Mombasa Old Town [now a 'World Heritage' site] uplift the passage ways of the Mombasa Hospital. Apart from painting portraits of famous people, Zuber’s work can also be found on the walls of Mombasa’s pristine places including the Vipingo Ridge. Visitors are often thrilled and delighted as they recognise so many traditional coastal scenes brilliantly highlited in his unique, evocative and splendid tribute to such rich, ancient and lasting cultures.
