NORTH OF SOMALIA -- Pakistani frigate PNS ALAMGIR has provided vital assistance to a stranded Indian fishing boat north of Somalia in the Gulf of Aden. During a routine anti-piracy patrol, PNS ALAMGIR encountered the fishing boat St Mary, whose 12-strong crew had been drifting in the busy seaway for eight days due to a gearbox failure. Over the course of the next 24 hours, ALAMGIR’s crew were able to fix the defect as well as provide much needed supplies. EU NAVFOR Spanish warship ESPS Patiño has left the Somali Basin and began the long journey home following a successful five months as part of the 'Operation Atalanta' counter-piracy operation. Patiño has been patrolling around the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden since joining EU NAVFOR in December 2017, maintaining an ongoing presence in the region to protect World Food Program, AMISOM, and other vulnerable shipping by deterring and disrupting pirate activity.
