Friends of Fort Jesus mourn passing of Coastweek newspaper

Happy New Year! Best wishes to all for the year ahead.

We are very sorry to learn that Coastweek newspaper closed down in December last year after 40 years of publishing.

Started in 1978, same year FFJ came into being, the newspaper was a coastal mouthpiece that reported coast news in a very informative and entertaining way.

For many ex-Mombasa residents now living in diaspora, the online version of Coastweek  was one to look forward to every week.

FFJ received tremendous support from Coastweek  and we are most grateful to Adrian Grimwood, Shiraz Alibhai, Anjum Asodia, Nidaa Malik, Gulshan Jivraj and the entire Coastweek  team for their very generous coverage given to all our activities.

On a more optimistic note Coastweek  have decided to donate their entire archives, i.e., 40 years of photographs and hardcopies of the paper to the Friends of Fort Jesus Photographic collection which is now looked after by the Fort Jesus Museum.

We are working with the museum curator on the modalities of shifting and storing the collection.

It will be a big boost to the FFJ collection that already has some 2,500 old photos. We hope this resource will be well used.
