Lions Club Of Mombasa Pwani Celebrates
32nd World Service Day “Special Olympics”

Coastweek-- World Service Day is celebrated all over the world. To celebrate World Service Day, Lions Club of Mombasa Pwani in District 411A organized a “Mini-Olympics” (Paralympics) for disabled children to participate in sporting events to display what they are able to do and to prove that “Disability Is Not Inability” on Sunday 21ST October 2018 at A.S.K. International Show Ground.

This is an annual event in the calendar of the Lions Club of Mombasa Pwani and is eagerly awaited by the disabled children because it gives them a chance to mingle freely and showcase their talent.

This activity costs over Kshs 2 Million to organize.

Over 1700 children with varying disabilities such as physically handicapped, mentally challenged, hearing impaired, blind and partially sighted were transported to the ASK Show Ground in the early hours of Sunday morning free of charge by various bus companies. 

Each was given a T-Shirt, which displayed the Lions Logo and happy packs which contained plates, bowl, confectionaries, biscuits, water, juices, exercise books, pencil, eraser and sharpener.

A march-past was arranged to parade the children and their minders and our Chief Guest District Governor Lion Ravinder Matharu, Club Lion member Hon. Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir

(MP for Mvita), President of Lion Club of Mombasa Pwani Lion Aamir Kitabwalla, Zone Chairperson Lion Shashi D’Silva, WSD Convenors Lion Kishor Parbat and Lion Bhupendra Rathod, Lion members, Lion ladies, invited Lion dignitaries and Government officials acknowledged their salutes.

The event was officially declared open by the District Governor with presence of most Lion members.

Track and field events were organized and the residents of Mombasa witnessed totally blind children running a 100-meter dash faster than most able people.

Physically Challenged boys and girls showed how fast they run on crutches.

The hearing impaired children showed their ability and the Mentally handicapped young children competed to fill sand in bottles.

Over 100 competitive events were organized and the top three participants in each event received prizes in true Olympic fashion.

They were given 1st Winner - a Blanket and a Gold Medal, 2nd Winner – Towel and a Silver medal and 3rd Winner - Mosquito net and a Bronze medal. All medals included a sticker of the logo of the Lions Club of Mombasa Pwani.

Our special thanks to Lion Murtaza who assisted us in preparation for School’s Name Boards and also accepted to be the sponsor for the stickers of both Boards and Medals.

Our Special thanks to Lion Bhadresh Shah also for getting the most of the outside sponsors who helped the most, I must say the big guns made this day successful.

The wooden work of the School’s Name Board was sponsored by Jambo Wood Works Ltd.

A special appreciation to Kansai Plascon Paints Ltd for sponsoring 1700 t-shirts for this event.

Chief Guest District Governor 411A Lion Ravinder Matharu during his address confessed he had never seen 1700 disabled children in one ASK Show Ground and so organized and well behaved.

He further pledged 1700 caps for the next year’s World Service Day Event 2019.

All the other dignitaries were extremely impressed that the so called disabled children ran on their allocated tracks and did not jump into the competitors tracks.

All children were transported to the venue from their respective schools by buses kindly sponsored by various bus companies in Mombasa.

This gesture gave much happiness to the children and it was picnic and fun day for the children.

It also gives the children a chance to mingle freely and showcase their talent.

Refreshments were served throughout the day and at the end of the event a sumptuous lunch was served towards late afternoon courtesy of Lion Mahendra C. Shah and family who have been providing for the last 32 years !

The President of Lions Club of Mombasa Pwani, Lion Aamir Kitabwalla received a lot of applause for his great leadership and he profusely thanked the conveners, Lion Kishor Parbat and Lion Bhupendra Rathod for their tremendous efforts in making this event a huge success.

A big thank you to all members of Lions Club of Mombasa Pwani who donated cash in kind, the Ladies Auxiliary and the staff of the Lions Medical Centre for their tremendous assistance.
