World Service Day is celebrated all
over the world. To celebrate World Service Day, Lions
Club of Mombasa Pwani in District 411A organized a
“Mini-Olympics” (Paralympics) for disabled children to
participate in sporting events to display what they are
able to do and to prove that “Disability Is Not
Inability” on Sunday 21ST October 2018 at
A.S.K. International Show Ground.
This is an annual event in the
calendar of the Lions Club of Mombasa Pwani and
is eagerly awaited by the disabled children
because it gives them a chance to mingle freely
and showcase their talent.
This activity costs over Kshs 2
Million to organize.
Over 1700 children with varying
disabilities such as physically handicapped,
mentally challenged, hearing impaired, blind and
partially sighted were transported to the ASK
Show Ground in the early hours of Sunday morning
free of charge by various bus companies.
Each was given a T-Shirt, which
displayed the Lions Logo and happy packs which
contained plates, bowl, confectionaries,
biscuits, water, juices, exercise books, pencil,
eraser and sharpener.
A march-past was arranged to parade
the children and their minders and our Chief
Guest District Governor Lion Ravinder Matharu,
Club Lion member Hon. Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir
are PCC Lion Murtaza Dungarwalla, WSD Convenors Lion Bhupendra
Rathod and Lion Kishor Parbat with winners receiving prizes.

invited Lion dignitaries and Government officials
acknowledged their salutes.
The event was officially declared open
by the District Governor with presence of most Lion
Track and field events were organized
and the residents of Mombasa witnessed totally blind
children running a 100-meter dash faster than most able
Physically Challenged boys and girls
showed how fast they run on crutches.
The hearing impaired children showed
their ability and the Mentally handicapped young
children competed to fill sand in bottles.
Over 100 competitive events were
organized and the top three participants in each event
received prizes in true Olympic fashion.
They were given 1st Winner
- a Blanket and a Gold Medal, 2nd Winner –
Towel and a Silver medal and 3rd Winner -
Mosquito net and a Bronze medal. All medals included a
sticker of the logo of the Lions Club of Mombasa Pwani.

Lion Ravinder Matharu during his address confessed he
had never seen 1700 disabled children in one ASK Show
Ground and so organized and well behaved.
He further pledged 1700 caps for the
next year’s World Service Day Event 2019.
