XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Kenya overall inflation rate increases to 5.58 pct in November

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Kenya’s overall inflation rate increased slightly to 5.58 percent in November from 5.53 percent in October due to an increase in the cost of transport, the statistics agency said on Friday.

“The Transport Index increased by 0.81 percent compared to the previous month. This was mainly on account of the increase in pump prices for petrol and public transport fares,” Zachary Mwangi, director general of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) said in statement.

According to the bureau, year-on-year food inflation was 1.72 percent. Mwangi said that the Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and other Fuels Index decreased by 1.24 percent compared to October 2018.

“This drop was mainly due to lower cost in prices of electrical consumption,” he added.

Between October and November, Food and Non Alcoholic Drinks Index decreased by 0.15 percent.

The prices were obtained from selected retail outlets in 25 data collections zones in Nairobi and in 13 other urban centers.
