Kenya sportsmen have been urged to start early
preparations for next year’s Africa Games, which will be held in
president of National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) said the
country must avoid a last minute rush if they are to secure
better results in the quadrennial competitions, which are
equivalent of a mini-Olympics for the African continent.
Speaking in Nairobi
on Sunday, Tergat said the Games will be critical as part of the
preparations for the 2020 Olympics and that each athlete needs
to show their best to boost their chances of making it to the
Tokyo Olympic Games.
“The games will
serve as Olympic qualifiers for several sports. Kenya will have
a big team in several disciplines. But there is no point for
these athletes to go and fill the numbers. We need a quality
squad capable of winning medals and raising the country’s flag
high,” said Tergat.

National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) granted Morocco
the opportunity to host the games in 2019 after the withdrawal
of Equatorial Guinea.
The 2023 Africa
Games will be held in Ghana who beat strong bids from Egypt,
Nigeria and Burkina Faso.
This will be the
first time that Morocco will be staging the event since it
returned to the fold last year.
Morocco has never
competed in the games since the 1978 African Games in Algiers.
Republic of Congo, Mali, Nigeria, Algeria, Kenya, Egypt,
Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mozambique have all previously held
editions of the Games.
