Kenyan campaigners urge regulations to promote safe abortion

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Kenyan campaigners on Friday urged the government to put in place regulations to promote safe abortions.

Marie Stopes, an international Non-Governmental Organization which promotes women reproductive health said that Kenya’s 2010 Constitution permits abortion under certain conditions but still lacks regulations to guide administration of safe abortions.

“However, without regulations to operationalize the constitutional provisions on abortions, Kenya women and girls cannot have adequate access to safe abortions,” said Christopher Wainaina, Director of Marketing at Marie Stopes Kenya, during celebrations to mark the International Safe Abortion Day.

The day is commemorated annually on Sept. 28 to recognize and celebrate gains made in the area of safe abortion.

Data from the health ministry indicates that at least 2,600 women die annually due to unsafe abortions.

Wainaina said that Kenya began the process of developing regulations on safe abortion but stopped the process in 2016.

“As a result, Kenya does not have clear guidelines or  policies on safe abortions and this makes the public health facilities seriously incapacitated to provide safe abortions,” he added.

He added that the regulations will standardize abortion procedures in all health facilities across the country.

He revealed that abortion is highly stigmatized and therefore there is no platform to hold discussions around safe abortion.

Wainaina said that when the general public is not aware of the availability of safe abortions they seek other alternatives that could endanger their lives.

He noted that it is upon government to provide necessary information in order to enhance access to safe abortion services.
