XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Kenya reduces price of maize flour following bumper harvest

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Kenya on Wednesday announced a reduction of maize flour prices following a bumper harvest.

Mwangi Kiunjuri, Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, attributed the bumper harvest to favorable weather conditions and government intervention in subsidizing the price of fertilizer and timely control of Fall Armyworm (FAW).

“The good performance across all agricultural sub sectors has been achieved due to timely interventions by farmers,” Kiunjuri told journalists while releasing the current national food security situation in Nairobi.

Kiunjuri told maize flour traders to reduce the retail price to enable consumers to enjoy food price than is currently the case.

“We are projecting to harvest an additional 6 million bags during the upcoming October-December rainfall that will bring the total available maize in 2018 to 46.9 million bags,” Kiunjuri added.

He said that according to a survey that was conducted by officials from the ministry, some traders are unfortunately selling a 2 kilograms packet of maize flour at 1 U.S. dollar and not 0.65 dollars, the government recommended pricing.

Kiunjuri announced that the government will take stern action against traders found exploiting consumers.
