XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Kenyan police arrest two suspected al-Shabab accomplices

GARISSA(Xinhua) -- Kenyan security agencies on Wednesday arrested two suspected al-Shabab accomplices in Ijara and Liboi towns in northeast part of the country.

Northeastern regional commissioner Mohamed Birik said the two—a Kenyan from Gatundu in central Kenya and a foreigner of European origin—were arrested after members of the public became suspicious of their movements.

Birik said the European was arrested in Ijara town while he was inquiring on where to board public vehicles to the border town of Hulugho, some 100 km away, Birik said.

“The public became suspicious and called in the police who picked for further interrogations. We handed them over to a team of multi-agency investigating team,” he said.

Birik said the Kenyan suspect claimed he was traveling to Kismayu, southern Somalia on a business trip.

“We are suspicious of his movement because his information is not adding up and uncooperative,” he said.
