Hosts Nigeria said Thursday that some African
athletes who came for the African Athletic Championship in Asaba
failed to make online payments for their visas on arrival.
authorities told the official News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that
most of the athletes did not make the required payments.
“As you know, we
don’t collect cash at immigration office any longer,” a top
immigration officer told NAN.
At least 200
athletes from about 12 countries were stuck in Lagos waiting for
connecting flight to Asaba to attend the championship which runs
from Wednesday to Sunday.
World 1,500m silver
medalist Timothy Cheruiyot from Kenya was among the notable
athletes stranded at the Lagos airport.

some 48 hours to put the situation under control.
