Nairobi Securities Exchange turnover swells on high foreign input

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Trading at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) rose considerably on Thursday as turnover hit 9.5 million U.S. dollars from 32 million shares.

Some 21 million shares worth 6.5 million shares were traded on Wednesday, with the Thursday trading boosted by high foreign participation.

The top movers during the session were Equity Bank (7 million) shares, Athi River Mining (6.4 million), Safaricom (6.3 million), Kenya Commercial Bank (5.5 million) and KenyaRe (1.9 million) shares.

Top gainers were Kengen, Umeme and NSE and Bamburi Portland, all of which gained 9 percent. The NSE 20 share index sustained growth, ending Thursday at a high of 3,349.77.

Similarly, the All Share Index stood a new high of 177. 03 while the 25 share index closed at 4576.03..
