Twahir Ali Alwi is the first Kenyan to
win the Zanzibar International Quran Competition held at Jaamiu
Zinzibar Masjid, the biggest on Sunday May 27, 2018.
The event in its 26th
edition was held at the Mosque which is the biggest in Coastal
East Africa and built by King Qaboos Bin Said of Oman.
Twahir recited the Quran in front of a
capacity crowd and the recitation was broadcast live in Zanzibar
The 17-year-old Twahir was awarded top
marks due to his melodious recitation and perfect memory.
He was awarded Tshs 4,500,000
(KSh220,000) plus automatic sewing machine, iron box and other
In the history of these competitions
Sh 4,500,000 is the highest ever awarded to the winner since the
competition was started 26 years ago.
Twahir beat participants from Comoro,
Uganda, Malawi, Zanzibar, DRC, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.
Muslim Mercy Youth (MMY) secretary
general, Mr. Said Abeid who was present in Zanzibar said Twahir
will now prepare for the East and Central Africa Quran
Competition to be held in Makadara grounds in Mombasa tomorrow
and on Sunday.
The 30 juzuu (books) winner of the
competition which is in its 16th year will receive a
pilgrimage to Mecca package plus a cash prize of Sh50,000.
The runner-up will go away with
Sh40,000, the third placed Sh30,000, the fourth positioned
Sh20,000 and the fifth finisher Sh10, 000.
