Joyce Msuya is new deputy executive Director of Nairobi UNEP

UNITED NATIONS New York (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday announced the appointment of Joyce Msuya of Tanzania as Deputy Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme in Nairobi, Kenya, his spokesperson said.

"She (Msuya) will succeed Ibrahim Thiaw of Mauritania to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for his leadership and dedicated service during his tenure," said the UN chief’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

Msuya was at the same time named by Guterres the UN assistant secretary-general.

According to a bio released by the UN, Msuya has since 2017 served as adviser to the World Bank vice president, East Asia and Pacific Region in Washington.

"She brings to the position more than 20 years of extensive experience in the field of international development spanning corporate, strategy, operations, knowledge management and partnerships, with diverse assignments in Africa, Latin America and Asia regions," the bio said.

Msuya previously served as the World Bank special representative and head of the World Bank Group Office in the Republic of Korea, as well as regional coordinator at the World Bank Institute covering East Asia and Pacific Region, based in China, and principal strategy officer at the International Finance Corporation’s Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services Department, it said.

Msuya holds a Master of Science in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Ottawa, Canada, and a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Immunology from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland, it said, adding she is married and has two children.

United Nations Secretary General  appoints Tanzanian
to top UN Environment Program post

DAR ES SALAAM Tanzania (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appointed a Tanzanian deputy executive director of the UN Environment Program (UNEP), a statement said on Tuesday.

Joyce Msuya replaces Ibrahim Thiaw, a Mauritanian national, according to the statement issued by the UN Information Center in Tanzania’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.

Prior to her appointment, Msuya served as advisor to the World Bank vice-president for East Asia and Pacific region, based in Washington, D.C., the statement said.

Msuya also served as regional coordinator at the World Bank Institute covering East Asia and Pacific region, based in China.

She holds a Master’s degree in microbiology and immunology from the University of Ottawa in Canada and a Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and immunology from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, said the statement.
