Kenya’s Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) launched operation on May 31, 2017, becoming the newest addition to the list of Chinese-built railways in Africa. With China geared up for the annual meetings of its top legislative and political advisory bodies, the global spotlight is on Beijing searching for clues on how the world heavyweight will play on the international stage after the significant “Two Sessions.” In a world beset with grave challenges in development, governance and security, leaders and observers worldwide say that guided by Chinese President Xi Jinping’s thought on diplomacy, China will continue to serve as an anchor of certainty and a spring of inspiration. China’s annual political sessions of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) are scheduled to convene in March, 2018. During the two sessions, development agendas will be reviewed and discussed, and key policies will be adopted. Year 2018 marks the first year of fully implementing the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, which vowed to pursue the vision of innovative, coordinated, green, and open development that is for everyone. Openness brings progress, while self-seclusion leaves one behind. The CPC congress made clear that China will not close its door to the world and it will only become more and more open.
