XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Kenya women’s football team moves to camp,
face Uganda in Africa Cup qualifiers

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Kenyan women’s national football team, Harambee Starlets hopes their successful campaign in 2016 will be replicated when they meet Uganda in the qualifiers in Nairobi.

Head coach Richard Kanyi has recalled the team to camp to start their preparation before they face Uganda Cranes in April. The two teams will play home and away before the winner proceed to meet Equatorial Guinea.

“There are a few changes in my squad, but generally, I am strengthening in areas I feel we need to bolster. Generally the team is strong and hopeful will be ready for the challenge in a month’s time,” the coach said on Tuesday.

The team will be pitching camp in Machakos for training with pitches in Nairobi not available as they are going under renovation.

The team took part in the COSAFA Women Championship last year in Zimbabwe where they finished fourth.

Two years ago, the team went a step better than their male colleagues to qualify for the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon.

However, they could not weather the storm with the level of competition so intense to be bundled out in the preliminary rounds. They lost all their matches to Super Falcons of Nigeria, Mali and Ghana.

However, they received important experience and will be aiming for better show should they make it to the finals.

The biennial international football championships will be held in Ghana with the best eight teams joining the hosts in the finals.

The coach has omitted midfielders Elizabeth Ambogo, Christine Nafula, Jacky Ogol and goalkeepers Vivian Akinyi, Samatha Akinyi from his 31 member team.
