Safaricom most active stock in turnover at Nairobi bourse

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Turnover at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) rose to 11 million U.S. dollars on a volume of 43 million shares from 33 million worth 8.5 million dollars on Friday.

Similarly, the benchmark NSE 20 Share Index was up 15.75 points to stand at 3,658.65 reversing a negative trend.

Safaricom, Kenya’s leading telecom was the most active stock moving 19 million shares at 0.23 dollars.

The banking sector accounted for 50 percent of the day’s traded turnover, with the Kenya Commercial Bank being the most actively traded counter moving 8.9 million shares at 0.40 dollars.

On the other hand, the energy and petroleum sector represented 3.3 percent of the traded value. Under the sector, Umeme moved 2 million shares to close at a 12-month low of 0.12 dollars and Kenya Power remained unchanged at 0.08 dollars and moved 1.2 million shares.

The insurance sector traded shares that represented 0.3 percent of day’s traded value. Britam Holdings in the sector traded 134,000 shares valued at between 0.13 dollars.

The All Share Index (NASI) ended 0.50 points higher to stand at 153.63 while the NSE 25 Share Index gained 34.91 points to stand at 4,080.96.

At the secondary bond market, securities worth 11 million dollars were traded, a slight increase from 10 million dollars in the previous session.
