Nairobi Securities Exchange registers best turnover since January

NAIROBI (Xinhua) -- Equity turnover at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) hit 89 million shares worth 18.7 million U.S. dollars Thursday as the bourse registered its best trading day since January.

The trading session was lifted by active trading of Safaricom, Kenya’s leading telecom, moved 76.4 million shares to emerge the day’s best trader at 0.19 dollars, a high of 0.6 percent.

Since January, the highest the bourse had risen in turnover was 17 million dollars on a volume of 67 million shares on March 14.

Foreign investors during the Thursday session were net sellers as they accounted for 88 percent of total trading.

Kenya Commercial Bank was the second most actively traded stock exchanging 2.5 million shares at a fairly stable price of 0.33 dollars.

Cooperative Bank, on the other hand, moved 2.4 million shares at 0.14 dollars to come third while Kengen was fourth with 2.3 million shares at 0.06 dollars.

Cement maker Athi River Mining was the last top traded stock with 1.5 million shares that went 0.20 dollars, a 2.5 percent rise.

The benchmark NSE 20 Share Index went down 7.07 points to stand at 3,102.71 from 3,109.78 while the All Share Index (NASI) ended 135.08 from 134.56.

On the other hand, the NSE 25 Share Index closed the day at 3,550.05 from 3,534.60.
