Zambia marks International Women’ s
Day with pledge to foster gender equality

LUSAKA, (Xinhua) -- Zambia commemorated the International Women’s Day on Wednesday, with a pledge by President Edgar Lungu to ensure equality between men and women.

At the main event held in Lusaka, Lungu appreciated the significant contribution that women made for the country, adding that women are capable of doing much better if challenges they faced are minimized.

The Zambian government has so far formulated a new gender equity and equality law, and called on all citizens to support it.

The Zambian leader also called for a one-minute silence at Wednesday’s event, in honor of victims of gender-based violence, saying that the vice had become abominable which must be stopped by all well-meaning citizens.

In the capital Lusaka, Zambian women from all walks of life marched along the Great East Road amid pomp and splendor as they sang songs.

Representatives from international organizations who attended the commemoration also encouraged Zambian women to be more assertive in their life and work.

Janet Rogan, the United Nations Development Program representative said, women have the potential to contribute immensely to the country’s development if accorded equal opportunities.
