XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Burundian women eager to contribute to well-being of families

BUJUMBURA, (Xinhua) -- As the world celebrated on Wednesday the International Women’s Day, Burundian women said that they are eager to contribute to the well-being of their households.

“A woman plays a big role in the development of her household and therefore the development of the country. Both my husband and I have to work hard and no one between us should take a rest,” Clotilde Ndayishimiye, a seller of clothes at Buyenzi City Market said.

She added that more and more women are now aware that they play an important role in the promotion of the well-being of families.

Another woman selling fruits indicated that she helped her husband build a house.

“My husband bought a plot and I contributed to raising walls of the house,” Bernadette Hategekimana said.

She added that it has been nowadays difficult for men alone to pay school fees for children.

In a declaration at the international women’s day, the Burundian government acknowledged that the women’s day happens at a time when the east African nation is facing hunger caused by climate change.

“Poor agricultural harvests observed these days do not allow women to enjoy their life in their households,” Burundian Gender Minister Martin Nivyabandi said.

He also indicated that the high fecundity rate reported in Burundi weakens Burundian women.

In Burundi, the women’s day has been celebrated in the country’s eastern province of Ruyigi under the theme “Protecting the environment: key to food security and women empowerment.”
