As mountains go, perhaps it is correct
to say that more has been written about Africa’s highest
mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, than the higher and more difficult
to ascend mountains in the Himalaya range.
Ernest Hemingway’s “The Snows of
Kilimanjaro” won acclaim as a novella and the film which starred
Gregory Peck likewise was a box office success.
The Amboseli side of the mountain in
Kenya has a variety of wildlife, despite the fact that it is a
dry area in the rain shadow of the mountain.
What stands out the most are the
elephants in Amboseli.
Many of the big tuskers are gone,
killed by poachers or hunters when these animals wondered out of
Aggravated human pressure on the
National Park and the ever-worsening environmental degradation
due to climate change is yet another looming threat.
Today, Amboseli still ranks among the
most unique national parks in the world.
How long this status will prevail
considering the burgeoning human population, is anyone’s guess!
