Zambia regulator finalizes platform of reporting online child abuse

LUSAKA Zambia (Xinhua) -- Zambia’s communication and technology regulator said Friday that it has almost finalized the development of an online platform meant for reporting Internet-related child abuse.

The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) said it was almost finalizing the .zm Search Portal, which would allow and enable children, parents and guardians to report child rights violations such as cyber bullying and pornography.

Hanford Chaaba, the regulator’s public relations officer, was quoted saying by the Times of Zambia as saying such child abuses were becoming rampant in Zambia.

The regulator, he said, would soon sign a memorandum of understanding with mobile phone service operators to ensure that they were mindful of children’s rights as they developed mobile phone content such as promotional messages.
