XINHUA NEWS SERVICE REPORTS FROM THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

Burundi sue African Union over unpaid salaries for AMISOM troops

BUJUMBURA Burundi (Xinhua) -- Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza said Friday that his government would sue the African Union (AU) over unpaid salaries for Burundian troops serving in the African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

Nkurunziza made the warning in a three-hour live program on local radio stations, during which he answered journalists and citizens’ questions.

"It’s regrettable that salaries of Burundian troops serving in the AMISOM have been withheld for about a year," he said, adding it is "unfair" as troops from other countries are receiving salaries.

"We (Burundi) will continue to claim the withheld salaries for peacekeepers until we get them and we will also request compensation," Nkurunziza said.

The president further warned that Burundian troops might be recalled home if the payment is not made next month.

Since 2007, Burundi has sent six battalions of over 5,000 troops into Somalia, which was facing constant threats of Al-Shabaab.
